Baccarat is the most famous game amongst Chinese gamblers, whether they come from the mainland or from Hong Kong or Macau.
CNN ha shown in their recent report, that Chinese players are very superstitious about the game, which makes for some colourful viewing that can’t be seen at tables in Las Vegas or Europe.
One of the superstitions is that a player will grip their cards firmly between their fingers, have a little glance by lifting its vertical end ever so slightly, and then turn the card around straight in order to take another glance at the number.
According to the report, the idea behind this practice is that the situation becomes more-tense; in the hope of getting a good pair close to the coveted number 9. But, using this practice outside of Macau might not have much luck. Playing with the cards in such a manner tends to gather them beyond an acceptable level, something only Macau casinos are willing to allow.
Another superstition amongst Chinese players is they blow on the card and assume that by doing this they will get rid of the bad numbers. So the Chinese in general are famous for their superstitious and when it comes to numbers, they use this on their gambling.
Commonly used Chinese gambling superstitions include: wearing red underwear to the casino; before heading out to gamble, switching on all the lights at home; and, specially to Baccarat, before opening cards; calling out the word ‘ding’ in Mandarin.
Therefore there is nothing surprising in it that these superstitions has really worked with them while Chinese playing the Baccarat. According to local government info, Baccarat was responsible for a huge 86% of Macau’s total gaming revenues in 2008, with a total worth of $11.8 billion.
