Kentucky Derby: Horses And Weird Names

A lot of people that enjoy betting and casino games are fans of horse races, and one of the most important Horse Racing Event will take place this weekend: The Kentucky Derby!

On May 5th all horse racing lovers will gather to put their money (fun or real) on the horse they feel will win and as some loose and some win big, we just can left aside one of the many entertaining aspects of this activity: horse names.

Over time we have been able to see pretty weird and funny names, so we decided to pick the weirdest horse names in the Kentucky Derby. As a matter of fact, 60,000 names are submitted each year to The Jockey Club, yes that is basically 60.000 of the weirdest names you can name an animal. Without further ado, here they are, hope you have as much fun as we did collecting them!

10. Bien Feo – As English speakers this really doesn’t sound like anything but funny…however in Spanish it does mean something: Really Ugly. Poor horse, it was probably not his fault if he was unattractive in any way.

9. Junk In The Trunk – We have the feeling that the person that named this horse likes something really specific and he just cannot lie…if you know what we mean.

8. Where Is The Beef- The weird thing is not only that the name makes you think about that mysterious meat you ate at the school cafeteria or on a more positive note, it reminds you of a good burger, but that 3 horses have been named like that already.

7. That’s What She Said – Funny people will always be funny people, funny names to a racing horse are definitely mandatory.

6. Walk of Shame – The Person that named this horse probably had quite a wild night when he decided to name it.

5. Slumpbuster – We only have one thing we would like to ask: what is a Slumpbuster exactly?

4. Riding Miss Daisy – An ode to a classic movie we all loved! (If you haven’t seen it, do it now!).

3. No Soup For You – The Sitcom that people loved for more than a decade: Seinfeld, and one of the funniest characters are depicted on this horse’s name.

2. Bodacious Tatas – Do you we really have to explain anything about this name? We feel it is pretty self explanatory.

1. I’ll Have Another – You’ll have another what exactly? This name might be a little demining to the horse don’t you think?

The History of Blackjack: Things you didn’t know

If you are into casino games, chances are you know a fun fact or two about your favorite games, we do too. It is nice to collect what apparently is useless information about stuff we find entertaining, therefore we went ahead and worked on a cool research: The History of Blackjack, but focusing on stuff we did not know, fun facts for those online blackjack players that visit the Virtual Casino on daily basis.

History of BlackJack

This is definitely something we all know, the game of Blackjack is the long lost son of old game called Twenty-One. No one really knows where 21 was originated, although there is an interesting legend that claims that it was first mentioned a book by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes(you have probably heard about The Quixote right?). The story claims that Cervantes was a gambler himself. On his story, Rinconete y Cortadillo, from his compilations Novelas Ejemplares, he claims are very proficient at cheating at ventiuna (Spanish for twenty-one). He also explains that the object of the game is to reach 21 points without going over it, even more interesting he specifies that the ace values are 1 or 11 on that game. Although in the book the game is played with the Spanish baraja deck, which is quite different from the card deck we are mostly familiar with: the Spanish baraja does not have eights, nines or tens. This story was written between 1601 and 1602, which gives us a pretty good idea of how old the game might be.

Twenty-one was introduced in the US by gambling houses. These places offered bonus payouts to stimulate players’ interest on this game: for example one of the most common bonuses was a ten to one payout if the player’s hand consisted of the ace of spades and a black jack; the name of this hand was of course “blackjack”, just like the game we currently play.

Other interesting facts of BlackJack

Italians and French have been claiming and disputing which of the two actually hold the title as the country where Blackjack originated; however there is absolutely no prove to say either one did it. The balance tilts a little to the French side as a lot of people claimed that the original name of the game is vingt-et-un (French for 21). Also, history claims that Napoleon loved the game of 21 and played it when he had time to kill on his exile in Elba, another point for the French right there.

Blackjack was once banned in the United States around the 19th century until 1939 as the state of Nevada removed its bans and the beginning of Las Vegas as we know it took place.

In the early 60’s there was a man named Edward O. Thorp, who wrote a book called “Beat the dealer”. On this book you could find the mathematical workings and details of the game. This man is recognized as the father of card counting. Because of this man and his book, Casinos everywhere altered some of the standard rules, which then lead to new variations of the game.

There is a Blackjack Hall of fame and it is not easy to get in it. The Blackjack hall of fame was opened back in 2002. Only blackjack experts, world known authors, and truly professional players have gotten a distinctive mention there.

Do you have any interesting Blackjack fun facts that you consider worth mentioning?

Casino Games People Hate: It Happens

Believe it or not people feel hatred for basically anything and everything, even something as trivial as a game! Here is a small compilation of casino games people just can’t seem to like…

Online Scratch Tickets

Apparently people can’t seem to find comfort on scratching ticket virtually and love the thrill of the dusty scratch leftovers. Also it seems that people have the preconception that they can’t win with these online scratch tickets as they have not been printed ahead of time.

Keno

Although the history of the game of Keno takes us all the way to the beginning of the construction of the great wall of China (which by the way can be seen from outer space), the game is not a hit. I truly wonder how is it that it financed the whole construction of a wall that big if people don’t really like it?

Roulette

Loved by many…hated by even more. The game of Roulette, as classic as it is, well…it is not very popular among casino games lovers, probably because it is too easy to play and the excitement doesn’t really measure up to what they are looking for, unless you play it on a land based casino with a whole bunch of people rooting for you on the table.

War

The card game of War has been around for ages. We have probably played it a thousands times since we were little, and that is the exact same reason people don’t enjoy this one in its casino game form. People think of this game as a child’s play and won’t give it the time of day when it comes to make a bet on it.

So there you have it, our list of the casino games people hate. Do you have an specific game you hate?

Want to bet how long will a celebrity marriage last?

For those of you who enjoy or claim to be gambling enthusiasts and like betting on props, such as “When is Lindsay Lohan going to quit drugs?” or more related to the subject “When will the hottest celebrity couple is going to split? This might be pretty interesting: Apparently there is a mathematical equation that tells you the odds on how long a celebrity marriage will last.

Apparently a science writer for The New York Times, who claims to be and uber-geek (according to his own words) has taken the time to create an equation that, according to him, can answer the question of how a long a celebrity marriage can last. The writer is John Tierney, and he writes for the Findings column of the already mentioned newspaper, The New York Times.

Earlier on this decade, a man named Garth Sundem,  who is the author of Brain Trust: 93 Top Scientists Reveal Lab-Tested Secrets to Surfing, Dating, Dieting, Gambling, Growing Man-Eating Plants and More!, was one of the firsts (if not the first) to work on a similar equation back in 2006. The variables of his equation included level of fame and marital track records (wonder what could happen to those who have not been wed before or just struck fame…)

According to Tierney, in spite that his equation still needs a little work done, it was correct predicting the splits of several famous couples such as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher; Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock; and Britney Spears and Kevin Federline (that one, we could predict without a formula).

Among the tweaks and fixes still on the works for the formula, the previous equation measured fame by the number of Google hits, while the new version uses a ratio of the number of times a celebrity has been mentioned in the Times divided by the number of mentions in the National Enquirer. As you can see this new version is based on journalistic response, which makes us think the other might be a bit more accurate since it is actually based on what people look for and not what a newspaper decides to publish, however, Mr. Sundem, the original creator of the equation says “This is a major improvement in the equation…It turns out that overall fame doesn’t matter as much as the flavor of the fame. It’s tabloid fame that dooms you.” He has a good and valid point if you ask us.

Other variables that have been added to the equation are the spouses’ combined age, length of the courtship and, of course, the sex symbol factor,  which is defined as the number of Google hits showing the female part of the couple “in clothing designed to elicit libidinous intent.” Why not men too? Are they not considered sex symbols too?

So what do you think? Are you ready to place your bets on the longevity of a celebrity marriage? If you make friends with the creators of the equation you might get a better chance of boosting up your bankroll.

The funniest and most sincere Casino Tweets (plus one Facebook update)

We love to read tweets and Facebook Status Updates about Casinos. They’re always entertaining.

People tell stories -sometimes in 140 characters or less, mind you- about how they partied ‘all night long’ at their best friends’ bachelorette party at some Vegas Casino. Pictures included and all.

Some simply whine about their bad luck on their shiny iPhone’s and Blackberries, although the moment they win they immediately switch to a life-loving mode that usually results in free rounds of drinks for the bystanders and calling  friends at ungodly hours to celebrate the defeat of the unconquerable, evil dealer of the blackjack table.

Casinos are really fun and people love to tweet and talk about them on Facebook. Good or bad, we’ll share the most sincere, funny and revealing Casino Tweets and one Facebook update we found on the social-network-sphere. Check ‘em out.

The funny ones

The hopeful

The honest ones

What are your favorites? Did you tweet any of these yourself? Tell us in the comments section.

Better yet, does it sound like what your casino pals usually say? Share this with them and make their day.

England vs. USA Match and How it Feels to Lose Money Gambling

I just got back from the bar after having lost a considerable amount of money on bets made on the England vs. USA World Cup match. I bet that it would end up 2-1 (of course I will not say who I was supporting as we want to keep all of our audiences haha) but it ended 1-1 and I lost.

It was quite a bummer, and I thought I should write something on how to deal with the feeling of having lost a big amount of money.

Many times in my online gambling experience have I lost money I did not feel ready to lose. However, I realize that when adding all the winnings and subtracting all the losses I am still on the positive side of the equation, though it still feels bad to lose.

I have managed to deal with the feeling by staying positive. Many times players are psychologically affected by losses and they start getting slappy at gambling in an attempt to get their winning back quickly.

From my experience I can tell you that this never works, after a big loss you should take some time to breathe as you will need a lot of patience to win that money back.

If you are overwhelmed by the loss then you should really ask yourself if you are ready to go back to the tables, because if you are not you might be setting yourself up for even greater losses.

Be patient, and slowly build your bankroll up so that you can win you money back and hopefully even some more. Everyone experiences unexpected losses, but if you want to be a winner you need to handle them wisely and not let them get the best of you as a gambler.

Our own Top 10 World Cup 2010 list

We’ve been closely following the buzz surrounding the biggest soccer tournament in the world (check out our post about the The Best World Cup Ads) and now we present to you our own Top 10 list for the 2010 FIFA World Cup:

1) The new soccer ball “The Jabulani” which has been designed –it seems- with the purpose of completely misleading players and just plain annoying them.

2) The promise (I’d say a threat really) from Maradona of running naked through the streets of Argentina should the country’s team win the World Cup.

3) For those fond of the male anatomy, a parade of great looking players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Cannavaro and Kaka.

All of this and more is what the World Cup brings us this year, all the way from South Africa as the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament, the most celebrated championship for the sport of soccer worldwide, kicks off today.

Here is what’s happening on the web surrounding the World Cup:

4) Google, never wanting to miss any of the action, recently launched their Street View in South Africa for Google Maps and videos portraying South Africa Stadiums in 3D. These are “360° street-level images taken by the Google cars displaying some 27 of the country’s cities and popular landmarks”.

5) Are you a British soccer fan? Then you will fancy this bit mate. It is a narration by Lego on how England made it to the 2010 World Cup.

6) The Official theme for the World Cup 2010 is called “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan but don’t get fooled: other artists tried desperately to get their songs picked to be the official theme. Get your earplugs out, it’s time for perfectly forgettable World Cup songs:

This is called “Waka Waka” by Shakira (wait, isn’t Waka-Waka the signature line for the Fozzie Bear?)

Lesser known but no less infamous are Sign Of A Victory by R. Kelly, “Oh Africa” by Akon and Grito Mundial by Daddy Yankee.

7) If you’re a twitter geek then the list of resources grouped together at the Tweetdeck Directory will certainly become handy. The application groups topics by hashtags as well as twitter accounts using those hash tags so you can keep up to date instantly.

8 ) If you want a clearer view of everything –I mean everything- that goes on Twitter related to the World Cup you can check out Twitter’s own World Cup Portal.

9) For those who rather reminisce on old times, when soccer players were heroes and their shorts were much smaller check out this video with the Top 50 Best World Cup Goals In History:

10) Finally, these will probably become collectors items soon: Some of the best 2010 South Africa World Cup murals by Fifa featuring Messi as a “soccer Messiah” and Cristiano Ronaldo looking confident with about 5 sets of feet.

And if you have some time after spinning the reels and winning huge cash winnings from TheVirtualCasino, why not visit Fifa’s site for the full World Cup match schedule to catch up on some soccer action!
